Tips To Keep Your Dressers And Chests Of Drawers In Good Shape While In Storage

After living in the same house for twenty years, I knew that some things needed to change. I started focusing heavily on going through my finances and evaluating my spending, and it occurred to me that there were a few issues with my monthly budget. I wanted to downsize, so I started thinking about ways to sell my house and move on. I was able to find a great storage unit close to my home, so I took the opportunity to move a lot of my stuff into the space. It was incredible to see how much of a difference moving a few things out made. This blog is all about choosing to move.

If you have several large, wooden dressers or chests of drawers that you're not currently using, you might want to put them in a storage unit rather than throwing them away or selling them. However, putting anything in storage requires some attention to detail if you want to ensure your items emerge in good shape. Follow these tips to keep your dressers and chests of drawers in top shape while in storage.

Polish them first.

Before you put your furniture in storage, take some time to clean and polish it properly. Dust any loose dust off of the wood, and then apply a layer of furniture polish using a soft cloth. This will keep the dust from setting into the wood as it sits in storage. Plus, the polish will help prevent cracks from forming if the storage facility's air is a bt drier than that in your home.

If possible, keep them assembled.

Some dressers come apart. You may be tempted to disassemble them to save room in your storage unit. However, this is not the best idea. Wood can become slightly warped while in storage. If you set a piece of the dresser on its end, it may bow slightly (just due to gravity and pressure) and then not fit back into the dresser properly by the time you remove it from storage. The best strategy is to keep the dresser assembled. If you're short on storage space, rent a larger unit -- or store things in the dresser drawers!

Store them on pallets.

Wood has a natural wicking ability. What this means is that if the floor it's sitting on becomes moist, the wood will absorb the moisture out of the wood. This can lead to rot and molding. So, it's best to store your dresser on a pallet rather than directly on the floor. Cover the pallet with a tarp so there is a waterproof barrier between the wooden dresser and wooden pallet.

Choose climate-control when possible.

If you live in a moderate climate where the temperature and humidity levels don't vary much, you can get away without a climate-controlled unit. However, in more temperate climates, you'll want a climate-controlled unit. Otherwise, fluctuations in humidity and temperature may cause your dresser to mold or crack.

If you take the time to store them properly, dressers and chests of drawers will do just fine in a storage facility. Talk to a local storage rental facility like http://www.securityselfstorageelginil.com/ to learn more.
